Some Tips on Using Windows Movie Maker

Windows movie maker is a popular free video editing software on windows. We can use it to do some simple video editing like crop, merge, or add effects, if you don’t need much advanced editing features, you can use the windows movie maker to edit your video share with your family or friends, adding some fun for our life.


(1) How to Crop a Video in Windows Movie Maker

1 Import the videos into Windows Movie Maker using the "Import Video" command in the Movie Tasks list. Select the video in the list window and click the "Import" button.2 Open the Virtual Dub program and open the same movie file in this program.

3 Add a resize filter to Virtual Dub, going to the Video menu, selecting "Filters" and the "resize." In the "Filter: resize" window, select 720 width by 480 height for the dimensions.

4 Click on the "Cropping" button in the Filters window--it will be gray and unusable until you add the filter--to open up the Filter input cropping window.

5 Use the four controls in the cropping window to trim and crop the video frame along the X and Y axes until you reach the desired cropped image and press "OK."

6 Save the cropped video as an AVI file, going to the File menu and selecting "Save as AVI." Make sure you know where the file is being saved to.

7 Go back to the Movie Maker application and import the newly created video file. You can now drag the original and/or the cropped video clips into the Movie Maker storyboard to compare the two.

(2) How to Insert and Merge Multiple Clips in Windows Movie Maker


1 Open the primary movie file in Windows Movie Maker. To import the movie file into Windows Movie Maker, left-click on the application icon to open the program, then scroll to the “File” tab and click on “Import into Collections.”

2 Edit the movie file as desired and save. Make all of the desired edits to the movie file and then save the file in Windows Movie Maker format to the desired location. Do this with all of the movie files that you wish to merge in Windows Movie Maker, prior to merging them.

3 Group all video files that you wish to merge into one folder for easy access. Create a folder on your desktop and add all of the video files that you wish to merge into this folder, this way you can access them easier.

4 Import each file, one at a time, and set it on the Timeline as desired. Follow step one to import each separate movie file into Windows Movie Maker. Left-click on the imported file and drag it to the position in the movie timeline that you would wish it to appear in. You can change the order of clips in the timeline by simply dragging and dropping them to different positions within the timeline.

5 Save the files to merge them together. Scroll to the “File” tab on the command bar and click on “Save As”. Select the desired format and save location to create the movie file and successfully merge the desired clips.

(3)How to Save Windows Movie Maker Project to wmv


1 Open Windows Live Media Maker.

2 Click the "Movie Maker" tab, select the "Open project" option and open the Windows Media Maker project file you want to convert to WMV format. Your project will appear on the screen.

3 Click the "Movie Maker" tab, highlight the "Save movie" option and select one of the available options. Depending on your preference and how you plan to view the WMV, you can select the "For high-definition display," "For Computer," "Burn a DVD" or "For Email" option. You can also select one of the mobile device settings if you plan to upload the WMV to your cellphone.

4 Enter a name for your video file and select the "Windows Media Video File" option from the "Save as type" drop-down menu.

5 Click the save button to convert your project to a WMV file.
